Careful planning, clear supervision and contingency arrangements are essential to ensure journeys are safe and well managed.

Supervision and Group Management

Effective supervision is essential when travelling by train, particularly in busy stations and public areas.

You should consider the age, maturity and experience of the group when planning supervision arrangements.

Participants should be briefed so they understand:

• Where emergency exits, meeting points and first aid facilities are located
• Expected behaviour while travelling
• What to do if they become separated from the group or miss a train/stop

You should also:

• Carry out headcounts/registers when boarding and leaving trains
• Know which participants are travelling in each carriage if the group is spread across multiple areas
• Ensure that staff have access to emergency contact information

Supervision should be particularly vigilant on busy platforms and in crowded station areas.

Seating and Group Organisation
