4.3 Places of Worship

Overview

Places of worship include churches, mosques, synagogues, temples, cathedrals and other sacred sites such as shrines or pilgrimage locations. While these spaces are primarily used for religious practice, many also have significant historical, cultural and architectural value.

Visits to places of worship can help pupils understand different beliefs and traditions, explore community life and appreciate important heritage sites. Many of the considerations that apply to visits to museums or heritage venues also apply in these settings.

Educational Purpose

When planning a visit, the educational aims should be clearly defined. Visits may support learning by helping pupils:

• Understand religious beliefs and practices
• Explore cultural and community traditions
• Appreciate historical, artistic or architectural features

Visits should always be educational in nature and must not be used to promote or persuade participants to adopt particular beliefs.

Preparation and Communication

Religion can be a sensitive topic for some families. Clear communication before the visit can help address any concerns. You should explain the purpose of the visit and reassure parents and participants that involvement in religious worship is not required.

Preparation may include:

• Sharing school policies on educational visits and religious education
• Discussing the visit in assemblies or class activities
• Encouraging understanding of different faiths and cultures
• Inviting representatives from local faith communities to speak with pupils
• Offering opportunities for parents, staff or governors to learn more about the visit and ask questions in advance

During the Visit

Participants should be reminded that places of worship are active religious spaces and should be treated with respect.

During the visit:

• Behaviour should be calm and respectful
• Participants should follow guidance on appropriate dress or conduct
• Visitors should be mindful of people who may be praying or reflecting

Where visits involve sites sacred to indigenous or local communities, participants should also be made aware of and respect local customs and traditions.

Appropriate supervision should be maintained at all times to ensure a safe and respectful learning experience.
