Types of visit
4.1 Local Area Visits
Version v3 ·
Overview
Local Area Visits provide regular opportunities for learning beyond the classroom in locations close to the school. Often referred to as the Local Learning Area, these visits allow pupils to experience outdoor learning, develop independence and connect classroom learning with real-world environments.
Typical examples include visits to local parks, places of worship, neighbouring schools, or local facilities such as swimming pools.
These visits are usually considered routine, low-risk activities and were formally classified as Category 1 or A visits, meaning they normally do not require external approval. Clear systems help ensure local visits remain well organised, safe and easy for staff to manage.
Purpose and Routine
Local Area Visits are usually part of the normal school day and take place during regular session times. They are intended to be frequent and easily accessible learning opportunities, requiring only proportionate planning and preparation.
Schools should establish clear procedures for Local Area Visits, enabling them to be organised swiftly and confidently while maintaining appropriate safety arrangements.

Parents should understand that:
- These visits are a regular part of school learning
- Individual notification may not always be provided
- Pupils should have suitable clothing and footwear for outdoor learning
Specific consent is usually required only for visits outside the Local Learning Area, outside normal school hours or for nursery aged children.
